Чешская Республика / Czech Republic

The country first competed as the Czech Republic at the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games and then at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996.

Katerina NEUMANNOVA has brought home the most medals for the Czech Republic. She collected a gold medal, four silvers and a bronze in cross country skiing after making the switch from the Summer Olympic Games to the Winter edition. She competed in mountain bike at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

Athletics is the sport in which the Czech Republic has been most successful at the Summer Olympic Games. Roman SEBRLE won the men's decathlon at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Javelin thrower Jan ZELEZNY is their most successful athlete of recent years, winning three successive gold medals (1992–2000). He also took the silver at Seoul 1988 and competed in five Olympic Games in all.

Barbara SPOTAKOVA continued the tradition at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with her gold medal in the javelin.

The Czechs' two other gold medals in Beijing came in shooting. David KOSTALECKY won gold in the men's trap and Katerina KURKOVA-EMMONS in the women's 10m air rifle. From 1920 to 1992 they competed as Czechoslovakia.

Legendary distance runner Emil ZATOPEK won the first of his four Olympic gold medals at the London 1948 Olympic Games.

At the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games he won the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon in the space of a week. His wife Dana won the women's javelin competition in 1952. Gymnast Vera CAVLASKA is the nation's most successful competitor.

She collected seven gold medals and four silver medals in a career that spanned three Olympic Games from 1960 to 1968. Czechoslovakia's men's team won the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games football tournament.
