Швеция / Sweden

Sweden's only representative at the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 was Henrik SJOBERG.

He competed in the 100m, high jump and long jump and also as a gymnast in the vault. Sweden's first gold medal came in the tug of war at the Paris 1900 Olympic Games.

Statistically, Sweden have had most success in wrestling. Carl WESTERGREN won three gold medals in his career. He worked his way up the weight categories in Greco-Roman wrestling with gold in middleweight (1920), light heavyweight(1924), and in the unlimited class in 1932.

Ivar Valentin JOHANSSON won gold in both Greco-Roman welterweight and freestyle middleweight at the Los Angeles 1932 Olympic Games. He won a further gold medal in Greco-Roman middleweight in 1936.

Rudolf SVENSSON won gold in men's Greco-Roman heavyweight in 1928 and then at light heavyweight in 1932. In the sport of athletics,

Eric LEMMING remains their most successful competitor to date. He won the men's javelin in 1908 and 1912. He also won the freestyle javelin gold in 1908. At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games,

Christian Bert OLSSON won the men's triple jump, Stefan HOLM won the men's high jump and Carolina KLUFT was heptathlon champion.

Canoeist Gert FREDERIKSON won six gold medals from 1948 to 1960. A further silver and bronze took his tally to eight medals, making him the most successful canoeist in Olympic history.

Shooter Oscar SWAHN was the oldest medallist in Olympic history. He won gold in both individual and team events in the running target single shot event in London and was also part of the victorious Swedish team in Stockholm at the 1912 Games. At 64 he remains the oldest man to win a gold medal.

His son Alfred won three gold medals and is Sweden's most successful Olympic competitor at the Summer Olympic Games.

Cross country skier Sixten JERNBERG won four gold medals in the period from 1956 to 1964. In 1948, Sweden's football team beat Yugoslavia in the final at Wembley to win gold.

Their team included the famous Gre-No-Li trio. Later, Gunnar GREN, Gunnar NORDHAL and Nils LIEDHOLM all turned professional and played with distinction in Italy's Serie A.

Willie GRUT took the individual title in modern pentathlon in 1948 and it remained in Swedish hands for the next two Olympic Games. Lars HALL won back-to-back gold in 1952 and 1956, the first man to do so in modern pentathlon.

Stockholm staged the 1912 Olympic Games and were represented by a team of 444, the largest in their history.

They also hosted the equestrian events of the 1956 Olympic Games.

Swede Johannes Siegfried EDSTROM was IOC president during the last Olympic Games to be held in London. His tenure ran from 1942 to 1952.
