Fencer Eduardo CAMET was Argentina's first Olympian. Living in Europe at the time, he took part in the epee competition at the Paris 1900 Olympic Games, finishing 15th.

When the Games returned to Paris in 1924, Argentina's polo team became the nation's first Olympic champions. Argrntina also won gold in this sport in 1936, the last time polo was included on the Olympic programme.

Swimmer Albert ZORILLA was the country's first individual gold medallist when he won the men's 400m freestyle at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games.

Two Argentinians have won the Olympic marathon. Juan Carlos ZABALA took gold in Los Angeles in 1932 and Delfo CABRERA won in 1948, the last time the Olympic Games were held in London.

At the same Games, boxers Pascual PEREZ in the flyweight division and Rafael Iglesias in the super heavyweight won gold.

Boxing remains Argentina's most successful Olympic sport, yielding seven gold medals.

In rowing, Tranquilo CAPPOZZO and Eduardo GUERRERO won the double sculls in 1952 but that proved Argentina's last gold medal for 52 years.

At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Argentina won two gold medals in team sports on the same day.

In the men's basketball they beat Italy in the final, having earlier eliminated USA.

In the final of men's football, Carlos TEVEZ scored in a 1-0 win against Paraguay. Inspired by the play of Lionel MESSI, they retained the title in 2008 in Beijing with another 1-0 final win, against Nigeria.
