An eight-man team from Thailand first competed at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Game in athletics, but all Thailand's gold medals to date have come in men's boxing and women's weightlifting.


Boxer Somluck KAMSING became their first Olympic champion when he won the men's featherweight title at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.


Wijan PONLID won gold in men's flyweight at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.


Manus BOONJUMNONG won light welterweight gold in 2004 and added a silver in Beijing in 2008.


Somjit JONGJOHOR became Olympic flyweight champion in 2008. Thailand's female weightlifters have also enjoyed great success since the event was introduced.


In 2004, there were gold medals for Udomporn POLSAK in featherweight and Pawina THONGSUK in light heavyweight.


In Beijing Prapawadee JAROENRATTANATARAKOON also won the women's featherweight.


Thailand's first Olympic medal had come at Montreal 1976 when boxer Payao POONTARAT took light-flyweight bronze.
