Португалия / Portugal

Portugal's first team numbered six at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games.

They took part in athletics, fencing and wrestling. Portugal's first medal was a bronze in team showjumping at the 1924 Games in Paris. A further bronze followed in the same event 1936, and at the 1948 Games in London, they continued the equestrian tradition with a further bronze.

Portugal's Olympic gold medals have all come in the sport of athletics. In 1984 Carlos LOPES won Portugal's first gold medal in the marathon. LOPES had also taken the 10,000m silver eight years before. Rosa MOTA won the women's marathon in 1988, and in 1996 Fernanda RIBEIRO won the women's 10,000m.

In 2008 Nelson EVORA won triple jump gold. He was the first Portuguese gold medallist in a field event.

In the women's triathlon, Vanessa FERNANDEZ took the silver medal in Beijing.

Portugal have enjoyed medal success in sailing. In 1948 brothers Fernando and Duarte Manuel BELLO took silver in the swallow class.

They competed together at four Olympic Games from 1948 to 1960. Another set of brothers, Mario and Francisco QUINA, took silver at the 1960 Games in the star class.

Armando MARQUES grabbed silver in trap shooting at the Montreal 1976 Games.

Portugal have never hosted the Olympic Games but Lisbon staged an IOC session in 1926.
