David NEPOMUCENO was the first man to represent the Philippines in the Olympic Games.


He ran the men's 100m at the 1924 Games in Paris. Swimmer Teofilio YLDEFONSO was their first Olympic medallist. He took bronze in the men's 100m breaststroke at the Amsterdam 1928 Olympic Games and added a bronze in the same event in 1932.


His great grandson Daniel COAKLEY was in the Philippines team that competed in 2008. Simeon TORIBIO took bronze in the men's high jump in 1932. He competed in three Olympic Games.


Miguel WHITE took bronze in the men's 400m hurdles in 1936. He also competed in the 110m hurdles.


Boxing has proved the most successful sport for the Phillippines. Boxer Jose Luis VILLANUEVA earned a bronze in the bantamweight division in 1932 at the Los Angeles Games and his son Anthony took silver in the men's featherweight at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.


All other gold medals won by the Philippines to date have come in boxing. Leopoldo SERRANTES grabbed light flyweight bronze in 1988 and Roel VELASCO took bronze at the same weight in 1992.


His younger brother Mansueto claimed a silver at light flyweight in 1996. When the Philippines team of 15 paraded at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
