Pakistan first sent a team to the London 1948 Olympic Games.
Their contingent included a hockey team that lost to Netherlands in the bronze medal play-off match.
It was the start of an impressive record in hockey. They also placed fourth at the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games and their first medal came at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. They took silver after losing to India in the final. Four years later, they won their first gold medal when they beat India at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.
Pakistan also won hockey gold in 1968 and in 1984. They also reached the final in 1964 and 1972 and have taken two bronze. With the exception of 1980, Pakistan have been represented in every Olympic hockey tournament.
In 1960 wrestler Muhammad BASHIR claimed bronze in the men's freestyle welterweight, their first individual medal.
The only other medallist is middleweight boxer Syed Hussain SHAH, who took bronze in 1988. Shabana AKHTAR was the first woman to represent Pakistan. She competed in the long jump at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
