Uzbekistan were first represented at the Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympic Games and then at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

At the 1994 Winter Olympic Games, freestyle skiier Lina CHERZAYOVA in the women's aerials won their first Olympic gold since independence.

In Atlanta, Armen BAGDASAROV took silver in men's judo middleweight and boxer Karim TULYAGANOV took bronze in light middleweight.

At Sydney 2000, their first summer gold as an independent nation came from boxer Muhammad Kadyr ABDULLAYEV in the men's light-welterweight class. Uzbekistan's other gold medals have all come in wrestling.

At the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Aleksandr DOKTURISHIVILI won in the men's middleweight Greco-Roman, and Artur TAYMAZOV won the freestyle super heavyweight in both 2004 and 2008.

 Uzbeks competed in Soviet teams from 1952-88 .The first Uzbek to win gold for them was Galina SHAMRAY, a member of the USSR women's gymnastics team in 1952. Vera Galushka DUYUNOVA took successive gold medals with the women's volleyball team in 1968 and 1972.

Alzhan Musurbekovich ZHARMUKHAMEDOV was part of the Soviet team that won the men's basketball final in 1972.

Elvira SAADI won two gold as part of the Soviet women's gymnastics team in 1972 and 1976. Wrestler Rustam Abdullayevich KAZAKOV was the first Uzbek to win an individual gold when he won Greco-Roman bantamweight gold in 1972.

They won two further wrestling gold medals in Seoul in 1988.
