Mongolia first appeared at the Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck and were represented later that year by a team of 21 in five sports at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.

Mongolia's wrestlers have provided most of the country's medals.

Jigjidiin MONKHBAT took silver in freestyle middleweight on the same day as three other wrestlers claimed bronze. They were Mongolia's first medals at the Olympic Games.

The first Mongolian woman to win an Olympic medal was pistol shooter Dorzshsurer MUNKHBAYAR at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.
