Shooter William CHETCUTI is Malta's most successful individual competitor. He finished ninth in the men's double trap at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and improved to eighth at Beijing 2008.


Malta's first Olympic Games appearance came in 1928. Their water polo team beat Luxembourg in their first match and placed fifth overall in a competition of 14 teams.


The 100m sprinter Alfred BENCINI was the first individual to represent them when he raced at the Berlin 1936 Games.


The last time the Olympic Games were held in London, in 1948,


Nestor JACONA was the lone Maltese competitor. He took part in the men's 100m. Shooting is a popular sport on the island. Joseph GRECH became the first Maltese to compete in three Olympic Games.


He took part in the trap shooting in Rome in 1960 and the skeet at Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972.


Archer Joanna AGUIS was the first woman to represent Malta. She competed in consecutive Olympic Games from 1980 to 1988. Malta have yet to win an Olympic medal.
