Исландия / Iceland

Iceland were first represented at the Olympic Games in London in 1908.

Wrestler Johannes JOSEFSSON was their only representative. He finished fourth in the Greco-Roman middleweight division.

Iceland sent a further two competitors to the Stockholm 1912 Games, but did not compete again until 1936.

Their first Olympic medal came at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games. Vilhamjur EINARSSON took silver in the men's triple jump. He had carried his country's flag.

His son Einar VILHJALMSSON was also chosen as flagbearer and finished sixth in the javelin at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.

Iceland's next medal came from judoka Bjarni Asgeir FRIARIKSSON, who grabbed bronze in the men's half-heavyweight category in Los Angeles in 1984. He competed in four successive Olympic Games from 1980 to 1992.

Vala R FLOSADOTTIR was the first Icelandic woman to claim a medal. She took bronze in the pole vault at Sydney 2000. At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Iceland took silver in the men's handball.
