Croatia first competed as a nation in their own right at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.


Goran IVANISEVIC, the 2001 Wimbledon champion, competed in four Olympic Games from 1988 to 2000. He claimed two bronze medals in tennis at Barcelona 1992, where he was also chosen to carry their flag.


Croatia took silver in men's basketball in 1992 behind the USA Dream Team. Croatia's first gold medal came at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 in men's handball. They repeated the success at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.


Nikolay PESHALOV was Croatia's first individual champion, winning the men's featherweight weightlifting gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.


At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Croatia had a team of 99. Blanka VLASIC took silver in the women's high jump and Filip UDE the silver in men's gymnastics on the pommel horse. Before independence, other Croatians competed for Yugoslavia.


In 1948 when the Olympic Games were last staged in London, there were seven Croatian players in the Yugoslavia football team that collected a silver medal, while the gold medal-winning football squad at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games included four Croatians.


At the Helsinki 1952 Olympic Games, Croats Dujc BONACIC, Peter SEGVIC, Mate TROJANOVIC and Velimir VALENTA made up the entire Yugoslavia gold medal-winning rowing crew in the men's four.


Durdica BJEDIC won gold in the women's 100m breaststroke at the Mexico City 1968 Games. Ozran BONACIC, Zravadko HEBEL, Ronald LOPATNI, Miroslav POLJAK, Karlo STIPANIC and Ivo TRUMBIC were all members of the 1968 gold medal-winning water polo team.


Boxer Mate PARLOV from Croatia won light heavyweight gold at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games when he stopped three of his four opponents. Croatia have also enjoyed success at the Winter Olympic Games.


With four gold medals, skier Janica KOSTELIC is Croatia's most successful Olympian a the Summer or Winter Games.
