Bosnia and Herzegovina first appeared at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, having previously competed as part of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Swimmer Janko GOJKOVIC became the first Bosnian to compete at three consecutive Olympic Games, contesting the 100m butterfly in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

Mirjana JOVOVIC-HORVAT finished eighth in the small bore rifle three positions in 1984 for Yugoslavia. She then represented Bosnia in air rifle in 1992, again placing eighth.

Croatia-born discus thrower Dragan MUSTAPIC represented Bosnia in the 1992 Olympic Games but made his three subsequent Olympic appearances in Croatian colours.

At Beijing 2008, shooter Nedzad FAZLIJA took part in his fourth Olympic Games. He competed in three events: air rifle, three position small bore and prone position small bore. His best finish was sixth in the air rifle at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Amel MEKIC reached the quarterfinals of the men's half heavyweight judo at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Bosnians have yet to win an Olympic medal as an independent state but from 1920 to 1988, their athletes enjoyed success as part of the Yugoslavia team.

Tomislav KRIEZ, Zelko PERUSIC and Velimir SOMBOLAC were all in the gold medal-winning men's football squad for Yugoslavia at the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.

Wrestler Branislav SIMIC won gold in Greco-Roman middleweight at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games and added a bronze in Mexico City in 1968.

Zoran JANKOVIC wa part of the gold medal-winning water polo team at the same Games.

In 1984, the Bosnian city of Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympic Games.
